2013 Sturgis Biker Rally

Sturgis, South Dakota is the home every year for the largest Motorcycle Rally in existence… The little Town of Sturgis, SD grows from a few thousand residents to over 500,000 folks… Residents, Bikers, gawkers… with the streets blocked off for nothing… but… motorcycles.  After hearing about all the bawdy revelry that goes on, Alice and I decided to go see for ourselves… Sturgis, SD is located on Interstate 90, close to Wyoming State line… on the North side of the Black Hills, as shown on the map below:

After getting off I-90, its a short drive to the mainstreet…Main Street, Sturgis, SD

Sturgis is not a large town… normal population is about 6,600 people.   During the Rally week (August 5th – 11th, 2013) the population swells to over a half million and services, space, and roadway are at a premium.   It is not uncommon to see camping in front yards… private residences advertising showers available… and of course ‘pay for parking’.Local Resident's houses become Campgrounds.

The roads throughout the Black Hills, and surrounding towns for 50- 80 miles are maintained in excellent shape for the Bikers.   During the ‘Sturgis week’, the roads thru the mountains are filled with Bikers.    The picture below was taken in Keystone, SD, home of Mount Rushmore.Keystone, sd during Sturgis Biker Rally week.

    • Hi Jay.
Many RV parks have Tent sites still available. Its a little expensive during Sturgis Rally time… but call the RV Resorts around Rapid City and ask for a Tent site for those dates.
